Learning about ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be a term you have heard before but you may not know much about the specifics of it. ADHD is one of the most common disorders of childhood, affecting approximately 5-12% of children.  ADHD often continues into adolescence and may continue into adulthood in approximately 60% of cases.

How do we recognize ADHD? That is, what is the difference between ADHD and just a child who can’t seem to sit still? According to the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA) the main symptoms of ADHD include hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. All children may be impulsive and lack attention to a certain extent, but with individuals with ADHD, the effect is much more predominant, consistent, and detrimental to normal functioning. Individuals with ADHD may have trouble paying attention & finishing work, may start many projects but never finish them, struggle with change, are easily distracted, have trouble following directions, and may be impulsive  and often act without thinking  (caringforkids.cps.ca).

The inability to concentrate on the simplest of tasks may result in school difficulties and learning impairments early on, as it is often difficult for children with ADHD to concentrate long enough to take in the information presented to them. As untreated ADHD may have a significant negative impact on a child’s life, it is important to get diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible. Speak to your local Edmonton psychologist for information on getting your child or yourself assessed for ADHD.

ADHD has been shown to respond well to pharmacological treatments (Pringsheim & Steeves, 2011). The Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada recommends that treatment for ADHD include other methods for treatment and not be completely reliant upon medication for care.  Edmonton psychologists recommend counselling and monitoring on a regular basis by qualified individuals to ensure that ADHD is being managed effectively.
