Emotionally Focused Therapy Edmonton
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is a short-term form of therapy that helps to improve attachment and bonding in adult relationships.
While most often used in couples therapy, EFT has also been adapted for use with families and individuals. The modality can help couples and family members develop a more secure emotional bond. The therapy often results in stronger relationships and improved communication.
What does emotionally focused therapy look like?
There are three primary stages of emotionally focused therapy that a therapist will guide individuals through. These include:
- De-escalation: This step in the process focuses on identifying negative patterns and emotions that may be causing conflict in the relationship. By identifying these pain points and developing skills to engage with each other more positively the relationship can flourish.
- Restructuring: In this phase individuals learn to share their emotions and become more compassionate towards the other person in the relationship. This often involves becoming more vulnerable and having the individuals ask for what they need.
- Consolidation: The final phase of emotionally focused therapy introduces new communication strategies to replace the old patterns. These new strategies reform the dynamic of the relationship creating a positive and healing environment for both individuals.
