ADHD Treatment Edmonton
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is more commonly referred to as ADHD. According to the Centre for ADHD Awareness, Canada the disorder affects approximately five to nine percent of children and three to five percent of adults.
ADHD is treatable and many who are diagnosed with this disorder are able to manage their symptoms with professional support.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect a person’s ability to focus, complete tasks, plan or organize, sit still, or think through certain actions.
- Some individuals with ADHD also display difficulty regulating emotions
- Although the exact cause of ADHD isn’t known in most cases, it’s been estimated that more than 84 million people are affected by ADHD around the world
- It’s a disorder that is more commonly diagnosed in childhood but ADHD can also present itself in adulthood as well
Although those affected by ADHD have a difficult time focusing on tasks that don’t interest them, they are often able to demonstrate intense levels of attention for tasks they find rewarding. This behaviour is known as hyper focus.
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder can present itself differently in each individual, but the primary symptoms of the disorder include:
- Inattention
- Hyperactivity
- Disruptive behaviour
- Impulsivity
- Inability to stay organized and plan ahead
- Difficulty with prioritizing
- Restlessness
- Mood fluctuations
- Inability to complete tasks
- Difficulty managing stress
- Not strong at multitasking
- Poor time management skills
Many people may experience some of the symptoms of ADHD at some point. If symptoms are new or have only occurred occasionally before, it’s unlikely that you or your loved one has the disorder. ADHD is diagnosed only when symptoms are severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life (e.g., social, school, work, or home).
