Christy Therrien

Practicum Student

“I am passionate about walking alongside with individuals as they navigate life’s challenges along with coping with depression and anxiety, reconnect with their strengths, and move towards their lives that reflects their values and sense of purpose.”

Christy is currently completing her Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at City University. She holds a Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work, which she completed in 2024, and has been working in the social services field since 2022. She became fully registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) in 2025. Drawing from her education and professional experience, Christy incorporates both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives into her practice, with an emphasis on cultural humility, respect, and individualized care.

Christy has experience providing counselling and therapeutic support to individuals and groups across a variety of settings, working with youth, adults, and individuals navigating substance use and other complex life circumstances. Through this work, she has developed a strong understanding of the ways trauma can affect the mind and body, as well as an individual’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Christy recognizes that people are deeply influenced by their relationships, communities, and broader social and systemic environments, and she considers these interconnected factors when supporting clients through emotional and behavioural challenges.

Christy’s therapeutic approach is grounded in respect, empathy, collaboration, and meaning-making. She is particularly drawn to the Humanistic approach, which recognizes clients as the experts in their own lives and empowers them to take an active role in their healing journeys. Christy integrates a range of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person-Centred Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, while remaining attentive to each client’s unique needs, strengths, values, and goals.

Above all, Christy strives to create a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental space where clients feel heard, respected, and safe to explore their experiences. She believes therapy is not about changing who a person is, but about supporting individuals in developing a deeper understanding of themselves, their emotions, and the experiences that have shaped them. Together, Christy and her clients work collaboratively to identify meaningful goals and develop therapeutic strategies that align with the client’s preferences and circumstances.
